Where we work

although we are a small organization with limited resources, NOC has a heart to welcome children who are orphaned, abandoned, and at-risk. We are working in the following countries.

South Sudan Culture:

Here are some links to well written articles on the culture of South Sudan.

This last link is from Samaritan’s Purse. It is a section of articles based on their experience working in South Sudan.

Kenya: NOC has provided scholarships to underprivileged children in Kakuma Refugee Camp. This country has and continues to host refugees from Sudan since 1992. Even though South Sudan gained independence in 2011, the time for repatriation is not known since her secession brought about another civil war.

Uganda: The fate of refugees is almost the same wherever they might be: live-to-fight another day. Uganda, a country which borders South Sudan, is faced with an influx of refugees each day, and many of these are unaccompanied minors and widows. Just like those in Kenya and other parts of Africa, the hope of when to return home is not known. We have supported children in the northern part of Uganda where many refugee settlements are located.

South Sudan History:

The independence of South Sudan came after decades of two divisive, long-running, north-south civil wars (1955-1972 & 1983-2005). These wars claimed millions of lives and brought about the destruction of the basic economy structure, leaving almost every citizen in abject poverty. With no respite and as bloody as the decades that preceded, South Sudan plunged into another civil war in December 2013, just 2 years after gaining her independence from the Sudan (July 9th, 2011). Such political upheaval for a country long affected by conflict, has created one of the world’s worst scenarios: orphaned children are almost everywhere in the country. These children live in the street and scavenge in the garbage dumps for food or are involved in unhealthy coping mechanisms and survival strategies such as begging, prostitution, theft and child labor. With this crisis, NOC’s main operations are taking place in South Sudan.
