NOC in the local news
Juba Monitor: Our response to an article they published about NOC
The Juba Monitor, a local news source in Juba, South Sudan wrote an article about our organization. Linking to that press article here is a way for us to acknowledge their recognition. We are grateful for their coverage in sharing our story.
A few points of appreciation:
- We are grateful that the Juba Monitor told the story of some individual students such as Achan Harriet.
- We are grateful for the ways the article shared some of the challenges our children and staff face.
- Our former landlord, Jospeh Mayen Akoon, has been a great ally and we are grateful for the years he allowed us to rent our school site.
A few points of correction:
- While it is true that the staff have been volunteers since our beginning in 2017, we have been able to acquire enough financial support to pay them a stipend since August 2021.
- We have been providing our children and staff with Nutri-Plenty meals donated by Love the Hungry. This is above the standard nutrition that many South Sudanese face daily. We are also expanding our agriculture program with the goal of growing food that would add to the nutrition and variety of our children’s meals.
- Water has been provided every month. It has been purchased and delivered onsite because our rental facility had no running water onsite.
- Water update: Since January 2022, we have relocated to our new site and our entire student body and staff have access to fresh clean water from a well on site. This water is also shared freely with that local community.
Forced marriage is a serious issue facing the young women of our community.
The Juba Monitor addressed this issue well, but because of the gravity of this issue, we want to provide this clarity.
- NOC is dedicated to treating every orphan in our care as our own children. We are resolutely opposed to any threat or harm to our children’s present or future. Just as our staff in Juba have strived to prevent this threat in the past, so we continue to seek every legal means available to protect our children.
